About Mazda

The company behind Japanese Mazda was founded 1920, and started making cars in the early 60's. The first model was a V-twin light weight two-seater, the R360. Mazda developed Wankel engines already during the 60's in co-operation with German NSU, then developing the famous Ro 80. The first Mazda with this type of engine was the Cosmo, a sports car presented in 1967. Mazda has had wankel engined cars in its line up almost all the time since then, mostly sports models in the RX-series. During the 70's and 80's, Mazda was successful in Europe as well as North America with reliable and competitively priced models like the 323, 626 and  929. Since the 80's Mazda has been part owned by Ford and the manufacturers has produced models in common as well as developed models sharing platforms. One example is the Ford Focus MK2, the  Mazda 3 and Volvo S40 generation M.
